This is the first retrospective written by landscape architect and designer Made Wijaya about his own garden designs, the inspiration behind his work, and the various "styles" he has adopted as his own. These "Collections" as he calls them, have transformed the Bali Hyatt, Amandari, Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran, and more that 400 gardens in tropical world, including the US Ambassador's residence in Jakarta, the former Mustique estate of David Bowie, and his own heaven and muse in Sanur, Bali, the Villa Bebek.
Dividing the book into thematic sections, Wijaya has drawn liberally from his portfolio of "Collections" such as "tropical Cotswolds", "ruinscape period", "bleu majorelle" and "courtyard cosy" to illustrate and illuminate the highly descriptive text. The book is wonderful source of reference, with the author describing the historical and architectural perspectives he has used to create his water gardens, Balinese gardens, paths and paving, compang, floating pavilions, courtyards, and such. It is also a practical guide with many suggestions for achieving similar results and with sound advice for professionals.
Made Wijaya's Tropical Garden Design is inspirational, decorated with evocative drawings and sketches by Chang Huai-Yan, and superbly selected photographs by international photographers Tim Street-Porter, Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, Tara Sosrowardoyo, Jerry Harpur and Reto Guntli, as well as from Made Wijaya's own unique collection.
The book is a celebration of more than 20 years of perfecting the art of tropical garden design.
