Of the island’s most colourful characters, Made Wijaya is a well known social commentator, columnist, landscaper and style chronicler. His first edition of Architecture in Bali was a self published black and white volume that covered the spectrum from the outrageous to the traditional. Finally, some twenty years later, Made has finished volume two and this time it comes with all the trimmings. Beautifully bound and presented in two forms. The coffee table cover favoured publisher Didier Millet (Archipelago Press) and the encyclopedic version by Made.
The book tracks the form and function of traditional architecture as a guide to serious-minded builders and developers while looking at the many modern derivations that have come to represent Bali-style in the present.
Made is most famously linked with the gardens of Four Season’s Resort, Bali Hyatt and Oberoi. His column, Stranger in Paradise has been revived from its earlier incarnation in the Sunday edition of Bali Post (now defunct) and continues monthly in the issues of Hello Bali.
The book is available at better bookshops around the world. US $40.
